It is poverty that drove me to bee keeping. I needed some alternative to get money. And since bee keeping was using traditional materials, it was cheaper to start. But also when I realized money from the first sales, I got motivated. Again by this time, people were beginning to talk a lot about bee keeping, so I thought I should now continue with it. That is why I am still in the job. I think I am not about to leave it.

The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

Currently, we are 5 in the home. Me, my wife and 3 of my children. But some of the children are out.

How has beekeeping changed your life?

Form bee keeping, it is now fairly easy for me to see some money. Because when you harvest honey, you don’t harvest everything at once. So, occasionally, you would go and harvest some honey and get money. Plus other sources like selling produce such as sim-sim etc. This has changed my life. I can now support my family and do a few other things. So, yes, bee keeping has changed my life

How do you provide a good environment for your bees?

Ok, one way I provide good environment for my bees is just to keep the apiary environment clean. I slash around and make sure fire does not get to burn them. Another way of providing good environment for them is to ensure they are not disturbed by pests etc. Because for them, they look for their own food. So, that is how I handle them.

What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?

First, trees are important because without trees for example, I would not keep bees there. So, trees mean a lot to me now, especially these ones in my apiary. People used to cut trees from this place. But after I started organized bee keeping, now I can’t allow anyone to cut them down. I now protect the trees like a child.

What is the most important thing in your life?

Well, what I think is important in my life is, I would like to live a better life. Everyone wants to live a good life. So, I really want to live a better life

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

………no, everything is hard. Generally, life is not easy. Here in the villages, things are tough. There is no money to do the things you would like to do. So, you have to fight hard. But now for me, I do a number of small jobs to get money. And I also get some money from bee keeping. So that is how I try to solve the problem. May be if I could get good capital and scale up the bee keeping enterprise, it would be good.

What do you like to do in your free time?

….well in my free time I do nothing….. I don’t touch anything. I just rest. That is all.

Which place would you like to see once?

…when I’m still alive? That is not in my thought at all. I just want to stay here……laughter…….
