“Beekeeping was a hobby tome. I started it as a child. However, as I grew up that interest remained in me. But then, I got more motivated when I realized that there was money in it, although not very regularly. With some knowledge obtained from different sources about bee keeping, I was motivated to go into the project.”

The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

My name is Odra’bua Jackson. We are in Oluko Sub-county. I am married with 8 children but some of them are out. So, we are about 10 in the home currently. Some of them are grandchildren.

How has beekeeping changed your life?

Bee keeping provides some income, although as I said, not regularly. But at least if they remain colonized, you will get some money after selling the honey. And you don’t struggle so much. They do much of the work for you. For instance, now I am weak and yet I can get money when my hives are harvested. So, it is indeed helpful.

How do you provide a good environment for your bees?

Largely by ensuring that their environment is clean. But also I have trees around and these trees now support my project. So now, I don’t have to struggle so much to provide for the bees. Everything they need is available…..the trees, there is some water down nearby. So, they are okay.

What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?

For me I learnt about trees when I was still in school.

We used to be advised that when you get employed, you should think about planting trees at your home, because they will help you in old age after you retire from work, especially trees like mangoes. That is what is helping me now, besides bee keeping.….Trees are also important to me for the bee keeping project. To protect them, I ensure no one cuts them, even my family members. That is how I protect the trees around here. Good enough these were planted, and they are in my own garden, so, no one comes to disturb them.

What is the most important thing in your life?

The most important thing in my life is to live a better life. I also take culture very important. So, I am involved in many cultural issues. I want to live in harmony with people

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

Yes, this project has challenges. Sometimes they colonize and abscond. And you can’t know their plans. So it is a challenge, especially at this time when I cannot do much work.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Well, I am now weak and so I really don’t do much work. So, I now rest most of the time.

Which place would you like to see once?

I would go to any place they tell me to go to. I would go, I would not choose. Well, if the opportunity was there, I
would want to go to Europe or America.
