“In fact, we have been keeping bees locally. When you harvest, we sell on the local market, and you would get money. Sometimes when the harvest is good, you can sell and buy a goat. That was the motivation.”

The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

My name is Wadri Gabriel. I’m 47years Old. I’m from Aiivu sub-county, Terego District. I’m married with children. We are 8 in my family.

How has beekeeping changed your life?

Yes. I have bought a number of goats using that money. When you have a problem, you can sell one or two goats to solve such a problem. And at least I can afford some basic necessities.

How do you provide a good environment for your bees?

This place is safe. There are no thieves. There are trees where we have kept the hives and there is water down in the stream.

The bees can go there and collect. So they look for their food. We make sure people do not disturb the bees because they can cause havoc.

What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?

Trees mean a lot to us. First, from fruit trees, and then those we use for keeping hives etc. We also get firewood from them. So, trees are useful.

Here we manage it. Each person has his portion of land. So, you protect what is on your land. That means you can stop people if they want to enter and cut trees from your land. That is how we protect them.

What is the most important thing in your life?

Thank you. The most important thing in my life is to be social and friendly in my community. That can benefit you right at your home. Social capital is very important.

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

I have faced challenges before, including losing a child. But there are also challenges in your everyday life. Therefore, I can’t say which is the biggest. To overcome challenges, you just have to work hard. But we don’t have a lot of means to address these challenges. So, what we do is just carry on and like now, focus on things like this bee keeping.

What do you like to do in your free time?

After work, there are friends out there you go and relax with. Sometimes you get advice from those friends…that is what I often do during my free time.

Which place would you like to see once?

At my age I’m not thinking of going far from my family. I just want to be near my family. Because if I’m not there, there will be no one to support them.
