“As a matter of fact, it was my father who started this project. But it was helping him a lot because he was not bothering anyone for support. I got impressed. However, he became sick and weak. Since I already saw the benefits, I decided to take over the project. Now, I am fully in charge of the project.”

The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

My name is William. I come from here Vurra sub-county.

How has beekeeping changed your life?

Before I took over from my father, the returns from this bee keeping helped him to support my siblings with school fees – at least 3 of my siblings benefited in terms of school fees and other requirements. Some of the money would be used for his personal expenses. And since I took over, I have realized the benefits as well, in terms of supporting the home. I still extend this support to my brothers. That workshop we have there sometimes gets capitalization from the money I raise from selling honey. Even the lease loan is being repaid out of that money. So, it has changed my life really.

What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?

Yes. Trees are useful to me. You see, trees help as break for strong winds and they give us fresh air. Sometimes when it is very hot, we benefit from their shade. But for this project, trees are really very important. We have the hives on these trees.

They provide shade for the bees, they also provide food for the bees through their flowers etc. So, trees mean a lot to us. Protecting them is by ensuring that people don’t cut them anyhow. Of course no one these days comes to cut a tree from someone’s garden. Each person now protects their trees. For the bee keeping project, they provide good shade for the bees and the flowers provide the bees with food. We have a plan to plant more trees as a project. So, trees are really important.

What is the most important thing in your life?

Thank you very much. At my age, the most important thing in my life is education. I pray to God for strength so I can educate my childre

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

There are challenges. The biggest challenge I have is lack of capital to do business. For you to survive well, you need to do a number business, but the capital is hard to raise. So, the struggle continues.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Yes, I get some free time. Free time is important. But during my free time, I rest. I just do some light tasks. And sometimes you take a walk to check on the hives etc. That’s how I spend my free time.

Which place would you like to see once?

Well, I would wish to go to see a place anywhere as long as that place favours me and my family will not suffer in my absence.
