“I was motivated by you people when you brought for us training in bee keeping. And when I got some benefits, I was motivated.”
The Life as Beekeeper
Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?
My name is Rashid. I am married and I have 8 children. So, we are 10 in the family.
How has beekeeping changed your life?
Beekeeping has changed my life in some ways. We eat some of the honey we harvest, others we sell to get money to support the family. So, beekeeping and honey is good for health.
How do you provide a good environment for your bees?
I mostly ensure their environment is clean.
And I have communicated with my neighbors to ensure they don’t tamper with the bees because they are dangerous. They have water and they look for their food.
What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?
Trees are good. They provide us shade. Here it can be hot, so trees are important. These ones we protect by ensuring they are not cut.
What is the most important thing in your life?
The most important thing in my life is farming, garden work. That is what sustains us apart from these things like bee keeping.
What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?
The biggest challenge I have especially in bee keeping is that I don’t have enough hives. Of course, others are challenges of lack of money to do business etc.
To overcome that I intend to use log hives. If I can increase my production and get more money, then I can use some of it as capital. But things are tough.
What do you like to do in your free time?
During my free time, I just rest here under these tree shades.
Which place would you like to see once?
What will I be looking for? I am deeply rooted here. I just go by the trading centre and spend time with friends. That’s it.
