“My father was a great beekeeper with over 300 hives. Our father taught us how to peacefully coexist with bees that’s why there are hives right beside our houses. Our father even had bees inside the house. We got our interest from his passion as we grew up following his footsteps.”

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?
I come from a family of 5 siblings, all boys. We live with our mother. Our father died two years ago.
How has beekeeping changed your life?
Beekeeping is how our father paid our school fees and provided for us. Because of beekeeping our father had started putting up a permanent house for us, it is incomplete but we are hoping to complete it from funds raised from beekeeping. From beekeeping I am able to pay school fees for my school going brothers. In this home beekeeping is life. We were born keepeers.
How do you provide a good environment for your bees?
We grow flowering plants. Our hives are located in quiet places where there is minimum disturbance. We provide water during dry season as Arua can be very hot and our streams tend to be seasonal. And we ensure to clean absconded and dirty hives for new swarms to occupy.
What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?
Trees provides cool environment by its shade and nectar to keep our bees alive. They provide oxygen for other living creatures in the area and are a provision of wood fuel for domestic use when we cut selective trees and avoid unnecessary cutting of trees.
We avoid burning of bushes as this would destroy the habitat for many living creatures. We plant more trees to form barrier against strong wind/storm and prevent sol erosion.
What is the most important thing in your life?
Serving God comes first. I love being in the presence of God.
What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?
My biggest challenge is fitting in father’s shoes to ensure my siblings go to school just like I did.
I would like to Increase number of hives for increased honey production hence increase our income. Also, I would like to start an additional business to generate more income.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am a great football fan. I love watching football on television especially the premier league and the local league.
Which place would you like to see once?
I would like to visit Johannesburg in South Africa. I have heard beautiful stories of that place.
