The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

Me, my husband and 10 of our biological children. Plus, two other children belonging to my sisters. So we are 14 in the family.

What motivated you to start bee keeping?

I realized I was growing older and weaker. So I needed to do something less tedious to earn money. My husband also retired and we needed to find a way to earn income. Then I heard about the training for bee keeping. My husband encouraged me to attend it. In that training that was conducted by Honey Pride Arua, I realized bee keeping is a project that has good future. That’s what motivated me to

go into bee keeping.

How has bee farming changed your life?

Much as it is not yet bringing a lot of money, at least I have that as a source of income to supplement the other sources such as selling produce etc. Whenever we harvest honey, we sell it and we get money. This money largely helps support the family with basic necessities, because it is not yet that much to help us pay school fees etc. We are seeing some change in the home economically.

What does being a bee farmer mean to you?

I feel good about it because i no longer toil up and down going to the market every other day.

What is the most important thing in your life?

The most important thing in my life is that my children should go to school, because I did not go far in education.

What would you like to change in your life?

To strengthen my spiritual life. I want to be close to my God

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

Family life. Sometimes it is good, other times it is bad. So, you have to be managing that.

Another problem is poverty. We survive from hand to mouth. That makes it hard to invest in other projects. School fees expenses are high, yet children must go to school. Overcoming these problems all requires money. And yet that is already a problem. So, it is

like we are going round in a cycle.

What do you do to enjoy yourself?

…hahaha ….. I drink the local brew called kwete…..to enjoy myself.

What would you do if you had one year off?

.ehhh ……..with many children to take care of etc, it will be hard. At least you have to be doing some work. It will be hard without work.
