“What motivated me was the desire to make money from bee keeping. Especially after we got some training. Previously, we would only depend on cultivation and was not bringing enough money to support the family. So, bee keeping was a good alternative.”

The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

My name is Samuel. I am married and I have children. However, the children are not here, so I stay with my wife and one grandchild.

How has beekeeping changed your life?

Beekeeping has changed my life a little bit because now it provides some alternative source of income.

How do you provide a good environment for your bees?

Generally, the environment here is clean and favourable for bees. But we have a challenge of some pests that keep attacking the bees, they eat the bees, so that sometimes forces the colonies to abscond.

What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?

Trees are useful. If you look at trees that are planted, you can sell them to get money or use for construction. As for the fruit trees, that is what children enjoy most. But they also help for bees because they pick their food from these trees.

Those near the home we protect them by clearing around them, pruning them etc. You ensure no one cuts them. That is how we protect them.

What is the most important thing in your life?

The most important thing in my life of late I realize is such project like bee keeping. These projects are very useful. Because if you take garden work, you can’t get much money. Especially if you consider the weather patterns, it is now hard to rely on it. Although crops grow faster in our land compared to other places like in Arua, the yields are low.

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

The biggest challenge we have with bee keeping here is the pests that I talked about earlier. There are pests and insects that disturb the bees a lot and often cause them to abscond.

To overcome these challenges, maybe you help us with solutions. Sometimes we don’t know what to do with it.

What do you like to do in your free time?

During my free time I just rest at home. Unlike those days when you would say let me go and relax etc.

Which place would you like to see once?

A place I would like to see once is the place where our trainer came from. Even in Kenya I would love to visit especially to see and learn more about bee keeping so that we can get more knowledge.
