Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?
My name is Martha Mindrea. We live in Rigbo sub-county. I am married with 4 children. So, we are 6 people in my family.
How has beekeeping changed your life?
When we harvest, we sell to you people. The first income from this was used to pay school fees for my daughter. Now if the money is enough, some of it is used to support the home with food items like salt, sugar and a few other things like soap.
How do you provide a good environment for your bees?
Ok, what we do is to protect them especially from fire during dry season.
Otherwise we try to keep the place clean and we check on the hives and clean them if they have absconded.
What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?
These trees are important. We want them to be like that. They support this work. They give good shade, food for the bees etc. If my husband is not around, he leaves me in charge to look after everything here. Yes, people try to cut trees, but here since the place has a lot of trees, they collect mostly firewood. There is not much charcoal burning here.
What is the most important thing in your life?
We want to get money to solve our problems. To be able to send children to school. That is very important.
What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?
Our biggest challenge is lack of capital. We would love to scale this project up, but we don’t have capital. The way out is to look for that capital. Apart from the money that comes from the honey, we try other alternatives. Sometimes he goes fishing or sell some crops.
What do you like to do in your free time?
During free time we just rest here under these tree shades. There is nothing much to do during that free time.
Which place would you like to see once?
I would love to go and see one place, but I don’t know where. May be I can go to Arua.
