“I just happened to attend some meeting at the sub-county. It was for a  bee keeping group. They were advising each other about the enterprise and the opportunities. So, I got interested. I came back and tried to put some local hives. The harvest was good at the end of that year. That time, my wife would go and sell it in the local market. When she comes back, she would give you like ugx.50,000 but she did not disclose how much it fetched. That was a lot of money and that motivated me to increase my hives. Then later, we heard about Honey Pride and the ready market they were providing. That was good news for us.”

The Life as Beekeeper

Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?

My name is Drileba Amos. I am married with 2 wives and 6 children. So, we are 9 people in my family.

How has beekeeping changed your life?

When we sold, it would support the family. Being a young family, that made life fairly comfortable. But I think going forward, it will benefit me and I am sure it will change my life.

How do you provide a good environment for your bees?

Our environment here is a bit clear. But during dry season, you have to guard against fire especially. And since we are close to the river, water is not a problem to them, even during dry season. They look for their food, so that is not a problem.

What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?

These trees are good. They help us for this bee keeping project. But also some trees are fruit trees like these mangoes. These help a lot. And people also use them for firewood.

In some places, people cut trees to burn charcoal for survival. But here, we have the water body. So, many people find it easy to go fishing than spending a lot of time cutting a tree, then burning etc which is very tiresome. That is why tree cutting is not rampant here

What is the most important thing in your life?

The most important thing in my life is my home. Ii really want to think about the education of my children so that they have a better future.

What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?

I had a serious personal challenge that took me away from home. That means a lot of things have to start afresh. Now I have to work hard to overcome those challenges. It is stressing, but I have to overcome it

What do you like to do in your free time?

Here people mostly youth go to the market to spend their free time. But I prefer staying home, because I don’t drink.

Which place would you like to see once?

I would love to go and see one place just here within Uganda. I don’t think I want to go very far.
