My Life as Beekeeper
Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?
I am staying with my mother and father and my 2 siblings. We are a family of 5.
How has bee keeping changed your life?
I am 18 years old and started with 10 beehives about one year ago. I have learned from others how to build the beehives myself. This is my first harvest season. My output still is low – about one jerrican of honey which is approximately 30kgs.
How do you provide a good environment for your bees?
I make the traditional beehives so the bees can colonize them.
I cleared the area where I have put the beehives. I have planted some flowering plants so that the bees can feed from near other than going very far in search for food. And I have planted some trees to create shade for the bees.
What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?
The give shade for us and the bees. They give us rain and protect the soil from erosion. Flowers for the bees to get nectar and pollen.
What is the most important thing in your life?
The most important thing in my life is my car.
What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?
One challenge is the material supply for building beehives. Materials for making the beehives are hard to get.
I might have to improvise with timber now. Another challenge is that I have no harvesting gear, so the bees disturb when I go to inspect and even during harvesting.
Pests are also somehow a challenge, but I try to slash the grass around the apiary
What do like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I like watching movies. I also enjoy playing soccer.
Which place would you like to see once?
I would like to visit Los Angeles.
