“My grandfather who used to keep bees and would give us honey. I liked the honey a lot. Therefore, I started beekeeping myself.”
My Life as Beekeeper
Who belongs to your family and who is living with you?
I am living alone.
How has beekeeping changed your life?
I have started beekeeping about 6 years ago. My harvest volume went from 200kg to 300kg and now I am targeting 500kg of honey. I have 60 beehives. I help my siblings to pay school fees and my parents with sending them some money.
How do you provide a good environment for your bees?
I am making sure my bees have a good environment by conserving the natural environment we have. On top of this, I am planting trees.
What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?
Trees help my beekeeping business a lot. Trees impact more rain and they provide bees with food. We need to protect our trees and not allow tree cutting.
What is the most important thing in your life?
I would like to build a good brick house with electricity.
What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?
I don’t have protective wear, so I get stung by bees when I harvest. Pests are another challenge and I therefore plan to put hives on metal stands. Finally, the
distance to the market for honey is big. I plan to buy a motorcycle.
What do like to do in your free time?
I love watching movies
Which place would you like to see once?
I would like to visit our capita city Kampala.
