“The opportunity to generate some extra money by selling honey got me into beekeeping. It has paid off.”
My Life as Beekeeper
Who belongs to your family / who is living with you?
I am living on my own.
How has bee keeping changed your life?
I have started with beekeeping 5 years ago with only 4 beehives. Over the years I have grown to 22 beehives. This equates to about 150kg of honey. From the money for the honey I sold I was able to buy a piece of land to put many hives in.
How do you provide a good environment for your bees?
My focus is planting many trees on my piece of land.
What do trees mean to you and how can they be protected?
Trees give flowers for the bees and also provide shade to them. They also provide organic medicine for many illnesses. We therefore protect them by not cutting them and conserving them.
What is the most important thing in your life?
Building a good house and buying a car.
What are your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome them?
My biggest challenge is using traditional beehives which don’t last long and have a low production output. I plan to slowly buy modern beehives.
What do like to do in your free time?
I enjoy going to the trading center in town.
Which place would you like to see once?
I am looking forward to travel to Mbarara.
